Job Description:
The Product Development department requires a talented
Senior Mechanical Engineer
with a capacity for oceanography and mooring designYou will work within our motivated team to develop sophisticated environmental monitoring systems for projects world-wide. 

Key Responsibilities:
Engineering
  • Support the design and development of metocean technology for a variety of marine applications, including floating, moored, seabed, mobile and platform mounted systems. 
  • Produce designs that support operating requirements for a variety of instrumentation including meteorological, oceanographic and telemetry equipment.   
  • Design layout and mounting of instrumentation in sealed marine enclosures in accordance with AXYS and industry standards for environmental protection of sensitive equipment.  
  • Develop technical fabrication drawings and manage the fabrication and ordering of parts with external fabricators and suppliers. 
  • Work with and manage 3rd party companies supporting new designs, design testing and technical reviews. 
  • Carry out technical analysis on mechanical parts and systems, including applying theoretical principles, numerical modeling, and physical testing. 
  • Produce assembly documents, work instructions, technical reports and system manuals as required to support product assembly, operation, and life-cycle management. 
  • Create and execute detailed test plans for product evaluation and system prototyping in accordance with AXYS and industry standards. 
  • Executes AXYS processes for design and development and non-conformance management in accordance with ISO 9001:2015. 
  • Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, software and data engineering disciplines to create fully integrated systems that meet client objectives. 
  • Provide engineering support to field services, production, sales, and customer service. This support includes technical support, report writing, work instructions, phone, and hands-on involvement. 
  • Run numerical simulations using ProteusDS to analyze mooring tension and platform stability. 
  • Aid in platform selection and compose technical specifications for moorings and AXYS platforms in response to project RFQs. 
  • Compose mooring design reports that describe the survival characteristics of AXYS moorings. 
Program Management 
  • Provides mentorship and assists with career growth and development planning for junior and intermediate engineers.  
  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining processes for the department under ISO 9001:2015. 
  • Leads department strategic initiatives as assigned. 
  • Assist with information capture for department capital budget & resources. 
  • Assist with engineering information resources – supplier and vendor relationships, 3rd party contractors and knowledge resources.  
General Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in relevant engineering design roles. 
  • BEng in Mechanical, Ocean Engineering or equivalent discipline 
  • Holds or is eligible for Professional Engineering designation in BC
  • Experience in completing design projects, delivering systems for the marine environment.  
  • Holds a thorough understanding of product design principles and standards 
  • Commands excellent problem solving and deduction skills. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills  
  • Willingness to take responsibility and driven to meet deadlines.  

Technical Requirements: 
  • Familiar knowledge of mechanical, material and reliability design principles.  
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD software; part, assemblies, and file management. 
  • Experience in the creation of professional level design documentation including requirements, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of material, test plans, FMEA, work instructions. 
  • Experienced with machine shop equipment and an understanding of manufacturing processes 
  • Experienced with file management systems and documentation control. 
  • Experience with the design of floating and subsea marine systems and applications 
  • Familiar with principles of fluid dynamics, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces on floating structures.  
  • Familiar with first principles knowledge of fundamental physical oceanographic processes including those related to waves, currents, and tides. 
  • Experience with the selection and application of modelling tools to accelerate mechanical design. 
  • Experience with the design of mooring systems and deployment/recovery procedures.
