Ocean Designer - Level 1 or Co-op

Role Outline:
The Product Development department requires a Ocean Designer – Level 1 or Co-op with a capacity for mooring simulation and design.  You will work within a highly talented and motivated team to develop sophisticated environmental monitoring systems for projects world-wide.  

Key Responsibilities:

Designing 

  • Support the design and development of metocean technology for a variety of marine applications, including floating, moored, seabed, mobile and platform mounted systems 
  • Run numerical simulations using ProteusDS to analyze mooring tension and platform stability. 
  • Carry out technical analysis on mooring parts and systems, including applying theoretical principles, numerical modeling, and physical testing. 
  • Compose mooring design reports that describe the survival characteristics of AXYS moorings. 
  • Expand simulation and analysis capabilities with Python scripting  
  • Aid in platform selection and compose technical specifications for moorings and AXYS platforms in response to project RFQs. 
  • Work with and manage 3rd party companies supporting new designs, design testing and technical reviews. 
  • Produce assembly documents, work instructions, technical reports and system manuals as required to support product assembly, operation, and life-cycle management. 
  • Provide support to field services, production, sales, and customer service. 
  • Ensure project requirements are clearly identified. 
  • Maintain communication of design status, risks, and changes with team lead and project stakeholders. 

 
Department Development 

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining processes for the department under ISO 9001:2015. 
  • Lead department strategic initiatives as assigned. 
  • Assist with information capture for department capital budget & resources. 

General Requirements 

  • Minimum BEng in Mechanical, Coastal or Ocean Engineering, Physical Oceanography, Computational Fluid Dynamics or other scientific disciplines dealing with numerical modelling (e.g. Physics, Mathematics). 
  • Experience in completing design projects, delivering systems for the marine environment.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Holds a thorough understanding of product design principles and standards. 
  • Commands excellent problem solving and deduction skills. 
  • Willingness to take responsibility and driven to meet deadlines. 

 

Technical Requirements 

  • Experienced with running and validating simulation results. 
  • Experienced with developing scripts programs in Python.  
  • Familiar with principles of fluid dynamics, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces on floating structures. 
  • Familiar knowledge of mechanical, material and reliability design principles.  
  • Familiar with 3DCAD software; part, assemblies and file management.   
  • Experienced with or desire to develop project management basics. 

 

Additional Ideal Requirements 

  • Experienced in the creation of professional level design documentation including requirements, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of material, test plans, FMEA, work instructions. 
  • Experienced with the design of floating and subsea marine systems and applications. 
  • Experienced with the design of mooring systems and deployment/recovery procedures.  
  • Experienced with file management systems and documentation control. 
  • Registered or eligible for registration with EGBC as an EIT or PEng.
