Mechanical Engineering Team Lead

The Product Development department requires a talented Mechanical Engineering Team Lead. You will work within a highly skilled and motivated team to develop sophisticated environmental monitoring systems for projects world-wide.

The Mechanical Engineering Team Lead role includes responsibilities for team leadership, engineering,
program management and department development.

Salary range is $100k-$125k, depending on skills and experience

Job requires on-site presence in Sidney, British Columbia.  Limited travel.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

  • As team lead, coach and support a mechanical design team of 2-7 FTE personnel.
  • Prioritize and assign tasks to the mechanical team based on their competencies based on business and design objectives provided by management and product team. Manage
    workloads and time availability.
  • Maintain oversight and provide guidance to projects assigned to team members.
  • Monitor and drive HSE, quality of work, productivity, fiscal efficiency, consistency.
  • Foster a culture of excellence within the mechanical team. Provide effective recognition of team members for their achievements.
  • Provide frequent and effective performance feedback to team, contribute to annual performance evaluations and development plans of team members.
  • Identify strengths and knowledge gaps to support professional development.
  • Train and mentor engineers, technologists, technicians and supporting staff.
  • Contribute to resource development and hiring process where required.

 

Engineering

  • Design ocean technology systems, including surface buoys, moorings, subsurface and seabed designs.
  • Design component layouts in payloads and enclosures and mounting for a variety of power systems.
  • Support operating requirements for a variety of instrumentation including meteorological,
    oceanographic and telemetry equipment.
  • Execute AXYS procedures for design, development and control of non-conforming product, including dependency support for sales, field service, customer service.
  • Drive efforts to meet client objectives and diligently work to clarify and establish requirements where they are unknown.
  • Create or update documentation for the fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of buoy systems.
  • Integrate and configure custom systems to meet client specifications.
  • Lead assembly, testing and troubleshooting products as required.

 

Program Management

  • Manage an active set of projects. Oversee project execution and maintain project deliverables, budgets, schedule, status.
  • Coordinate team resources with respect to project demands and facilitating program
    management functions.
  • Maintain regular and tailored communication between the team, internal and external
    stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify project requirements.
  • Support overall capacity by establishing and maintaining external resources including contract workers and internal swing resources.

Department Development

  • Assist with monitoring and maintaining processes for the department under ISO 9001:2015.
  • Identify and drive strategic department initiatives.
  • Establish and align to standards (industry/regional/global) for engineering design.
  • Contribute to information capture for department capital budget & resources.
  • Assist with engineering information resources supplier and vendor relationships, 3rd party
    contractors and knowledge resources.

 

General Requirements

  • BEng in Mechanical or Ocean Engineering or equivalent discipline.
  • Holds or is working toward Professional Engineering designation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams to successful outcomes.
  • Experience in managing design projects, delivering systems for the marine environment.
  • Holds a thorough understanding of product design principles and standards.
  • Commands excellent problem solving and deduction skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to take responsibility and driven to meet deadlines.

 

Technical Requirements

  • Senior level knowledge of mechanical, material and reliability design principles.
  • Experience with SolidWorks CAD software; part, assemblies and file management.
  • Experience in the creation of professional level design documentation including requirements, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of material, test plans, FMEA, work instructions.
  • Experienced with machine shop equipment and an understanding of manufacturing processes.
  • Experienced with file management systems and documentation control.
  • Expert understanding of floating and subsea marine systems and applications.
  • In depth understanding of fluid dynamics, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces on floating
    structures.
  • Experienced with the design of mooring systems and deployment/recovery procedures.
